The Rolls-Royce Merlin Engine
Nestled in the Derby suburb of Littleover, The Grange holds a significant place in aviation history as the site where the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine was designed.
During the Second World War, this elegant Regency villa was requisitioned by Rolls-Royce to serve as an overspill development office for the very engine that would become synonymous with the Spitfire.
It was within these walls that some of the most crucial design work for the 27-litre V-12 engine took place, helping to perfect the powerplant that would not only propel the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane during the Battle of Britain but also power a host of other iconic aircraft, including the Avro Lancaster and the de Havilland Mosquito.
The Grange’s contribution to the Merlin’s development, a project that began as a private venture in the early 1930s, was instrumental in creating the engine celebrated as a British icon of the war era.

Having recently held our wedding ceremony and reception at The Grange Banqueting Suite my wife Lyn and myself would like to thank Julie and all the staff for making our day so special. On our first visit prior to making the booking Julie explained everything so professional and put both of us at ease and we felt this was a wonderful place to get married. We would like to thank Julie and all the staff on behalf of our guests and ourselves on the excellent service provided throughout the day. We wished we could've given it more than 5 stars fully deserved. Jim and Lyn Walters.Posted on Google Lydia TwiggTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
